The Japan Aeronautic Association established the Important Aviation Heritage Certification System in 2007 to recognize aviation heritage of high historical and cultural value as “Important Aviation Heritage,” to widely promote its significance to society, and to preserve it for future generations. In 2008, the first certifications were granted to the YS-11 transport aircraft mass-production first unit, owned by the National Museum of Nature and Science, and the Type 91 Fighter, owned by Saitama Prefecture. Since then, the following aviation heritage items have been certified as Important Aviation Heritage:
